Son organisation avant-gardiste attribuant des niveaux distincts pour les départs, les arrivées et le fret, a servi de modèle pour de nombreux aéroports. Après la seconde guerre mondiale, Les Américains et les Britanniques utilisèrent cet aéroport pendant le pont aérien de 1948 à 1949. Au début du 21è siècle Tempelhof a vu sa fréquentation diminué et a perdu près de 115 millions d'euros. Depuis 2008 l'aéroport est fermé et une bataille politique sur les possibilités de reconversion s'est engagée.
